Senior Member Weekend 2010
Senior Member Weekend 2010 turned a spotlight on communication skills and careers for the nineteen youth who spent an exciting time in Montreal from September 25 to 26. First stop was CTV Studios where participants met television personalities, got a close-up look at technology and learned about how the news gets to air. A delicious lunch at Restaurant O Noir demonstrated the challenges faced by the blind and also surprised some diners with their first taste of escargot.
From there it was a brisk walk to the Atwater Library which generously provided a workshop on blogging through its Digital Literacy Project. The 4-H Communications Manager also came to describe the fun and challenge of his job and present a sneak peak of the new national website. A behind the scenes tour of the Monument National impressed visitors with the striking architecture and a chance to see everything that goes into putting on a theatre production. The dynamic guide who provided the haunted tour of Old Montreal demonstrated his skills in communication as listeners learned more about the early days of the city. The night was topped off by games of Laser Quest, every 4-H’er for themselves, then guys against the gals.Sunday morning started with a scavenger hunt where members had to take photographs of menus, signs, statues and other items with a communications theme. At the Montreal Science Centre’s idTV interactive exhibit, small groups worked together to compile, edit and narrate their own news report about a scientific topic, which they presented to the entire group. Everyone enjoyed touring the regular science exhibits before heading home.
For some participants, it was there first time navigating the Montreal metro system, valuable practice for students who may soon be headed to the city for their post-secondary education.
